“That is very beautiful, eh!” remarks a young Syrian whom Alexandros Pissourios met recently in Kastellorizo. The Greek island is picturesquely located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea – a magnet for tourists. At one peak of the refugee movements in 2015, boats with innumerable desperate people reached even the most remote islands. Despite everything, it is – the young man states – a piece of paradise, Kastellorizo.
Pissourios sets the soundtrack to fragments of casual conversation and the young man’s spontaneous thoughts. The images come from earlier years such as a cruise in the Greek Islands and Turkey in 2011 and the deck of a ferry on its way from Lesbos to Athens in 2015. From knee height, the camera follows the apping of a shirt and a pair of jeans in the wind. Next to them rest stuffed backpacks, and passengers occasionally pass by.
